Texans Standing Tall
Darrion Borders spent his teen years on Austin, experiencing homelessness and addiction at an early age due to trauma. Since then, he has become involved in promoting community awareness, youth leadership and responsibility, and social change through Hip Hop. Mr. Borders has worked with The Cipher – Austin Hip Hop Project peers to create, produce, and publish two albums: “From Solders, to Warriors” and “Lyrical Lessons.” In particular, Mr. Borders uses Hip Hop to bring awareness to communities about what the needs of youth and the community as a whole. Through these and other projects, he has preformed numerous times in the Austin area. Mr. Borders also has substantial experience in youth leadership development and mentoring through creative and artistic outlets. He works with the City of Austin Health and Human Services on HIV/STD prevention by developing opportunities for new young artists in Austin to have the resources they need to create. His experience participating in non-profit organizations includes being a service provider at LifeWorks in Austin, working as a Peer Support Specialist with youth ages 16-21 dealing with addiction, trauma, homelessness, and mental health issues. In the future, Mr. Borders hopes to continue his education and work in music or video production with a positive youth focus.
