Collaborate for Change
:
In the past year, budgets for prevention have been cut at local, state, and national levels. The 2013 Texans Standing Tall Statewide Summit will be a two-day event bringing national and state experts together with participants centered on working together to ensure continued funding and focus on strategies proven to prevent youth alcohol and tobacco use.
Decreased funding provides an opportunity to use our collective voice to advocate for an accountable use of resources. By utilizing evidence-based strategies that have a track record of working, we will increase our statewide capacity to make alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs irrelevant in the lives of youth.
Implement Strategies that Work
:
Raul Caetano (MD, PhD, MPH) co-author of Alcohol: No Ordinary Commodity: Research and Policy, second edition and Dean and professor at The University of Texas Southwestern School of Health Professions, will serve as a keynote speaker.
Dr. Caetano, international alcohol policy expert, will present from this globally recognized body of research on effective solutions to reduce alcohol related societal harms.
Mobilize for Results
:
Participate and learn practical and effective steps for statewide community action, engage in discussion, and attend breakout sessions to sharpen skills for local and statewide civic engagement to advance effective prevention strategies. The knowledge and skills that participants will take back to their communities can make a meaningful impact in creating a healthier and safer environment for youth.
The Statewide Summit will take place as Texas’ legislative session is underway, giving participants the opportunity to visit the Texas Capitol and observe how legislators address substance abuse prevention.
